Between our smartphones, tablets, laptops, e-readers, and desktop computers, we are rarely very far away from internet access. That means that we can share pictures, update social media accounts, deposit checks, transfer money, shop online, and more - without ever leaving the house (hello, generation of hermits!). That also means that every day we are transmitting a lot of personal information across the vastness of cyberspace, and crossing our fingers that those little security logos and privacy policies on websites actually do what they say. Rather than trust all of your super-secret passwords (a.k.a. your favorite pet's name) to outside security, we think a better approach is to make sure you're covered by getting some of the best personal security software on the market.
Most consumers like to do their research before they commit to purchasing a product as important as antivirus software. We've reviewed one of the most popular products created by VIPRE, a top internet security software company that has protected over 5 million computers and counting worldwide, to give you the low down on how their namesake antivirus product works.
In an online world where consumers are often overwhelmed with endless options and millions of search results, it's kind of a relief to shop on a website that only focuses on the essentials. VIPRE clearly lists out their five security products in an easy-to-find dropdown on their homepage. VIPRE's most basic (yet still comprehensive) antivirus product is simply and intuitively called VIPRE Antivirus. It clearly lists out all of the features you will get, which include essentials like antivirus and anti-spyware protection, email and IM attachment screening, and software that scans USB and other removable drives when they're plugged into your computer. VIPRE lays out their website in a helpful manner so users can easily find more information about their products and individual features of each product without getting lost.
Once I selected VIPRE Antivirus, I was taken to a shopping cart that was again laid out very nicely for the consumer. It clearly showed the purchase price (currently $39.99 for one PC for one year), and gave me obvious options to change the number of computers or number of years of coverage. It also pre-checked a $9.95 backup CD add-on, which may be a nice-to-have, but I didn't think sounded necessary, so I opted out. $39.99/year is already a good price for antivirus software, but if you have multiple PCs or want multiple years of coverage, the yearly price per PC quickly drops even more. For example, if I want to cover five computers for three years, my yearly price drops from $39.99 per PC to just $8.67. So, the willingness to invest a little more upfront truly does pay off in this case. Plus, if you hate the idea of having to continue to renew your antivirus software, VIPRE is one of the few companies that allows you to purchase lifetime coverage. It definitely seems worth it if you plan on keeping your PC for several years, as the cost is not much different from the three year coverage. Download & Installation:
As soon as I made my purchase with a credit card (they also accept PayPal), I was presented with a confirmation page and walked through the steps to begin using my software. They also immediately sent a confirmation email with the same info in case I closed my browser or wasn't ready to install right then and there. VIPRE makes it pretty straightforward (and includes pictures!) so anyone can follow the steps regardless of your level of experience with installing software.
They even include handy-dandy screenshots like the ones below, along with links to technical support to help you along the way if you get stuck.
I don't know about you, but I like knowing there's an expert waiting to help me out when I'm using a new product for the first time. I mean, you must not be the only one that can't find their license key if they have a whole side bar set up to help folks look it up.
There are a few more basic steps they will walk you through to complete the installation process, but no more exciting pictures, so we'll breeze past those to the end so we can start using our new antivirus software! All in all it took about 15 minutes to download and install the software, and I think it would have been a little faster, but the free antivirus software that was already installed in my computer was a little reluctant to be uninstalled, so I had to finagle that for a bit and then reboot my PC.
Using the Software:
One of my favorite parts of VIPRE Antivirus is what I like to call the "set it and forget it" feature. For the TV infomercial fans out there, it has nothing to do with cooking chicken, but it does take all the work out of remembering to schedule your computer scans. It automatically schedules one "quick scan" every 24 hours and one "full scan" every week. You can quickly and easily edit the frequency or type of scans as soon as you open up the program. I have been able to continue to use my computer as usual while scans are running without any noticeable hiccups or slowdowns.
There is also a help & support tool built right in to the program on the account page, and it keeps you updated on how long you have until your antivirus subscription expires.
Finally, the manage tab lets you know if there are any updates to your software, lets you customize how VIPRE Antivirus handles viruses and malware, and gives you the option to choose the types of files to lookout for.
While VIPRE Antivirus does cover the essentials when it comes to online protection, this is definitely not a "bells & whistles" version. They keep it simple and straightforward for the user, which can be a very nice thing. However, if you're looking to step up your security game, you should check out our review of VIPRE's next level of online protection, called VIPRE Internet Security.
Overall, we give VIPRE 4.5 out of 5 stars for their suite of internet security software. They also feature mobile security for your smartphones, password vault to help you securely store your ever-growing list of passwords for different website you log in to, and enterprise antivirus software for businesses. We've found that VIPRE does an excellent job of delivering effective security products that do what they say they're going to do without slowing down your system or getting in the way of other programs.
